Verbal Whitespace: Translating Page Skills To Words

A great diagram! You've seen them. You've experienced them. They exemplify the old adage, "A picture is worth a thousand words." Do we give as much thought to what we say and how we say it when we are presenting? What if we applied the same principles to the words we add to our pictures?

Great diagrams result in clarity, confidence, peace, and even inspiration! Great speakers can achieve similar results by augmenting their diagrams and pictures with effective words and delivery.

Let's explore how we might go about applying some of the same principles that make diagrams great to the spoken word. In this post we'll start with whitespace.

The Power of the Headline

I recently read a wonderful post on the power of using good headlines in PowerPoint presentations. Cliff Atkinson provides some very helpful information for anyone using PowerPoint in their work on his Beyond Bullets blog. His comments provided a nice springboard for thinking about the power of headlines for the one preparing a presentation or paper. I felt compelled to share this idea on his blog and also expand on it in this post.

I find categorization a helpful method for getting my initial ideas down on paper or into a PowerPoint presentation. While this may be an effective method for collecting ideas, research shows that it is not an effective method for sharing ideas.
